Have you had a balayage, ombre or highlights? Is it getting brassy? Here are a few ways to keep that under control.
No more brassy hair!
Purple conditioner is perfect for keeping the brassiness at bay. It is a hydrating conditioner with a violet pigment to help neutralize brassiness. Conditioners are acid based which helps close the cuticles of your hair and extend the cool tones for a longer time. The best part about using a conditioner with violet pigments is that you can leave it in your hair longer for a cooler effect. The longer you leave it in the more it can neutralize. For example, if you just want to have a slight change in color, leave the conditioner in for 5-10 minutes. However, if you want to be ashier or even a grey tone, 15-20 minutes is perfect. There are many great products such as Redken’s ‘Blonde Idol Custom-Tone Violet Conditioner’ or Kenra’s ‘Intense Violet Toning Mask’.
Wash the brassiness away!
Purple shampoo helps keep the brassy tones away as well. As it cleans your hair, it also deposits violet pigments to neutralize that unwanted brassiness. When using a purple shampoo, you can leave it in for 5-10 minutes. Though it is not as strong as the conditioner, it helps with a subtle color change. Redken’s ‘Silver Charge shampoo’ is one of my favorites.
These products help at the end of the day to keep you looking fresh as if you just walked out of the salon. How often should you use them? Not every day but about 1 to 2 times a week is plenty. For those who want an ashier or a grey tone, you can use it more often. However, the purple shampoo can be drying if used too often, be careful!
When should you start using these products? Depending on your hair, I recommend about 1 to 2 weeks after your color service.
Time for TLC!
You have been using all those products and the brass still will not pass? Its time to go back to your hairstylist for a toner! What is a toner? What does it do? A toner is an acid based, ammonia free color that can only deposit the desired pigments. Meaning it is not damaging at all! They last for about 4 weeks depending on how often you wash your hair. I recommend using a toner after 6 to 8 weeks after your color service.
